A Message From Janie Kay, Prevention/Intervention Specialist
Hello and welcome back to a successful year! I'm Janie Kay, the Student Assistance Counselor helping to implement prevention and intervention at MRHS. It was a pleasure to be at MRHS last year, and I am looking forward to another good year.

I'd like to give you a brief outline of what a Student Assistance Counselor does:

  • Provide students and parents with information about drugs and alcohol
  • Help guide students into making positive choices
  • Prevention teams working to educate students in the school
  • Meeting with concerned parents and students
  • Education and prevention of tobacco
  • Support and education groups

I will post DID YOU KNOW information in future newsletters regarding events and trends in drugs and alcohol. We all know education is key to prevention! Visit the following websites for useful information:

Unheard Voices
Unheard Voices is a group for students to gain skills and support to deal with issues around stress and depression. It is a confidential group that meets once a week during school hours for 15 weeks (most of first semester). The group works on skills to boost self-esteem, set boundaries, raise emotional IQ and develop positive thinking habits. Students can be referred by themselves or by teachers, friends or family. Please contact Mrs. Bones at 206-810-7312 or talk to your school counselor or Mrs. Calkins for more information.
