The Jim Kennett Track Renovation Project @ Mount Rainier!

What is this project all about?
We’re reaching out to the community to help us renovate the 58year old cinder Track at the site in Des Moines shared by Mount Rainier High School, Pacific Middle School, and Midway Elementary with a six-lane rubberized surface track. There simply were not capital improvement funds available to replace the high school and renovate the old track.

Who uses the Track?
Over 2,500 kids at the three schools, student/athletes, and the local community use the track over 60,000 times per year.

Who is Jim Kennett and why name the track after him?
Jim coached was the head Track & Cross Country Coach @ Mount Rainier High School from 1969-1978. Jim was a dynamic leader who led Mount Rainer to 7 League championships, 5 individual state champions and the 1972 AAA Track and Field state team championship. Won the 1976 National High School Coaches Association award for the Western U.S. Jim was born in Victoria, BC, graduated from WWSC (now Western Washington University) and now shares residences between Phoenix Arizona and Kent, Washington. Please see our About Jim page also.

How much will the track cost?
A six-lane all-weather track and high jump area will cost $165,000. We just learned (Oct-07) that we were successful in having King County Parks recommend we receive $75,000 for the project. With existing commitments of $61,000 from Highline Public Schools , $10, 000 from the City of Des Moines and $6,500 in local fund raising we are only $12,500 away from having our new track a reality.

What is the project schedule?
• Highline Schools commitment (secured)
• Submit King County Grant (June 2007)
• Fund Raising (Spring 2007-2008)
• Track installation (Summer 2008)
